Background

Co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who met with Jeffrey Epstein multiple times between 2011 and 2014, all after Epstein's 2008 conviction. The New York Times documented at least six meetings, mostly at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse. A May 2011 meeting was attended by Gates, Epstein, JPMorgan executive James Staley, former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers, and Gates science adviser Boris Nikolic.

Internal emails revealed Gates's team discussed a multibillion-dollar charitable fund with Epstein as potential co-manager. Gates flew on Epstein's private jet from Teterboro to Palm Beach on March 1, 2013. Nikolic was named as a "successor executor" in Epstein's will, though he said he was "shocked." Gates initially told the Wall Street Journal he had "no business relationship or friendship" with Epstein but later acknowledged the meetings were "an error in judgment." Melinda French Gates cited her then-husband's relationship with Epstein as a contributing factor in their 2021 divorce.

French Gates told NPR in February 2026 that the DOJ file releases filled her with "unbelievable sadness" and reminded her of the struggles she faced in her marriage. Her advisers held calls in October 2019 after the New York Times reported the extent of the meetings. DOJ files released in January 2026 included two draft emails Epstein wrote to himself in July 2013 claiming he had facilitated sexual encounters for Gates and helped him obtain medication to hide a sexually transmitted infection from his wife.

Gates denied the claims as "absolutely absurd and completely false," stating the emails were never sent and were written solely by Epstein. A March 2026 Fortune investigation reported that between 2013 and at least 2018 Epstein financially supported Mila Antonova, a Russian bridge player who reportedly had a relationship with Gates around 2010. Epstein organized her visa, wired her cash, housed her in Manhattan apartments, and paid for her coding education, later pressuring Gates through his chief of staff Larry Cohen to reimburse him, writing "Playing with fire" in an April 2018 email.

Gates's spokesperson called those claims false. A separate Fortune investigation (March 2026) documented coordination between Gates and Epstein on philanthropy, with Gates responding to Epstein's advice in ways that indicated he took it seriously. Epstein repeatedly leveraged the Gates relationship to broker charitable donations through Harvard, including contributions from Leon Black.

House Oversight Transcribed Interview of Kathryn Ruemmler on Jeffrey Epstein
2026-07-15 · House-oversight · Testimony
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform took a voluntary transcribed interview from Kathryn H. Ruemmler on 15 July 2026 in Room 2247, Rayburn House Office Building, from 10:08 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. over three majority and three minority rounds. Sixteen members are listed as present; Chairman James Comer requested the interview and Billy Grant led the majority questioning. Her counsel were from Arnold & Porter and Liu Shur Kravis. She was White House Counsel to President Obama from 2011 to 2014, global chair of Latham & Watkins' White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice from July 2014 to April 2020, and Goldman Sachs' general counsel from March 2021 until she stepped down at the end of June 2026, testifying she is now in an advisory role there. Ruemmler testified that Epstein cold-called Latham & Watkins in July 2014, days before she formally started, pitching a donor-advised fund he said he was building with Bill Gates, and that weeks later he referred the Edmond de Rothschild Bank to her and remained its primary advisor until she left private practice. She testified he was never her client, never retained or paid her, and that she saw no evidence of ongoing criminal conduct while she dealt with him. Twenty-two exhibits were marked, eighteen minority and four majority; seventeen carry EFTA Bates numbers read into the record. Most are her emails with Epstein; exhibit R is the minority's Interim Staff Analysis. They cover an itemised accounting of gifts, her lawyer referrals, a White House tour, a December 2018 draft media statement she edited, emails around the Maxwell defamation litigation, and her Goldman Sachs disclosures. She said repeatedly that she regrets dealing with him.

Transcribed Interview of Bill Gates, House Oversight Committee, June 10, 2026
2026-06-10 · House-oversight · Testimony
A 138-page transcribed interview of William H. Gates, III by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, held in Room 2154 of the Rayburn House Office Building on June 10, 2026 and running from 10:00 a.m. to 3:43 p.m. Gates appeared voluntarily with counsel John Moran of McGuireWoods and Tom Clare of Clare Locke LLP. Peter Spectre, director of oversight for Chairman James Comer, stated on the record that the interview was requested under House Rule X as part of the Committee's investigation into the crimes of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the operation of sex trafficking rings, "the ways in which Mr. Epstein and Ms. Maxwell sought to curry favor and exercise influence to protect their illegal activities," and potential ethics violations by elected officials. Questioning alternated in hour-long majority and minority rounds. In an opening statement Gates said he was introduced to Epstein in 2011 by people he trusted, that Epstein claimed he could raise billions for global health from people he advised on taxes and estates, that no giving vehicle was created and no funds were raised, and that meeting Epstein was "a grave error in judgment." Majority counsel worked through three Epstein emails released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, the economics of science adviser Boris Nikolic's exit, an August 2013 Seattle meeting and the thank-you note that followed, three extramarital affairs, a $2 million MIT donation, a Southern Trust Company contract naming Gates, law-enforcement contacts and a roll call of names. Minority counsel moved chronologically through Epstein's calendars and estate photographs. Members questioned Gates about Melanie Walker, the September 2014 donor meetings, and whether women he saw around Epstein were victims.
