Background

Deputy chief of staff to former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who served as governor from 2003 to 2011. Hartley's name appears in the Epstein files through her direct role in coordinating Epstein's 2010 clemency effort with Florida Governor Charlie Crist. In a December 22, 2010 email to Epstein assistant Lesley Groff, Hartley wrote that Richardson, who had just returned from North Korea, was asking whether anything had happened with Governor Crist on the clemency request.

The following day Hartley messaged Groff that Richardson planned to call Crist on December 27. Epstein had completed a 13-month sentence on Florida state sex charges and was seeking executive clemency to clear his record. Groff's files also show a December 3, 2010 note that Crist was to call Epstein directly.

Crist subsequently told reporters he never spoke with Richardson or Epstein about the matter. Richardson died in 2023 and could not respond to the revelations.
