MIT professor of mechanical engineering and a pioneer in quantum computing who accepted a total of 25,000 in donations from Jeffrey Epstein. The donations included a 0,000 personal gift around 2005, before Epstein's conviction, and two additional 0,000 donations in 2012, which MIT's internal review found Epstein used to test the institution's willingness to accept funds post-conviction. Lloyd failed to disclose the 2012 donations to MIT administrators and also accepted an additional 00,000 donation he did not report.
In August 2019 Lloyd published a public apology. MIT placed him on paid administrative leave in January 2020 pending review. A faculty committee in December 2020 found he violated MIT policy but allowed him to retain tenure.
For five years he faced restrictions on pay, donor solicitation, and first-year advising. His associate Michele Reilly visited Epstein's island in 2015.
