British musician born February 13, 1950. Lead singer of Genesis from 1967 to 1975, then launched a successful solo career. His 1986 album So went five times platinum in the US; the single Sledgehammer won nine MTV Awards in 1987.
Founded WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) in 1980, which has held festivals in over 30 countries. Co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS in 1992 to empower activists using video documentation. Helped develop The Elders with Nelson Mandela and Richard Branson, announced in 2007.
Received the Man of Peace award from Nobel Peace Prize laureates in 2006. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist in 2014. Appeared in Epstein's black book.
