American journalist and magazine editor born October 7, 1959, in New York City, daughter of literary editor Jean Stein and diplomat William vanden Heuvel. She served as editor and publisher of The Nation, the oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States, from 1995 to 2019, and returned as editor subsequently. She is a regular political commentator on television and a contributor to The Washington Post.
She is a senior fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Her name appears in Epstein's black book. No allegations of wrongdoing in connection with Epstein have been made beyond the black book listing.
